Several
years ago, the Verona Environmental Commission (VEC)
embarked upon an outreach program to educate Verona’s
students about Non Point-Source Pollution (NPSP).
Verona is a text book example of a valley community; and
the issues of NPSP clearly affect us all. It was
suggested we purchase an Enviroscape because it was
determined that this tool was not only educational but
fun both to observe and demonstrate. We have provided
previous demonstrations in Verona’s elementary schools
with the assistance of our Americorps representatives.
Our efforts were so well received by both the students
and staff members; so we decided to share the experience
with the eighth graders at the H.B. Whitehorne Middle
School. Our plan was finalized in the spring of 2007.
The two major initiatives for this effort were, firstly,
to present the realities of NPSP to our students and,
secondly, to get out and clean up the Peckman River that
flows directly through Verona as it makes its way to the
Passaic River.
